1st Black Woman to Win Olympic Swim Metal...

She is from French Guyana and swimming for France, but I was  still excited to see Malia Metella win the Silver metal in the 50 meter freestyle...the event that determines the fastest swimmers in the world!  She is only the third black athlete to win an individual medal in Olympic swimming history.

Back from Barb's Race at Vineman

Ok. So it has been awhile since the Barb's Race Vineman relay. Some gear issues, but no flats or broken chains. It was a beautiful 56-mile ride from Guernville, through Santa Rosa and beyond. I have to admit, the last 5 miles were the longest 5 with constant teasers. Everytime I saw the orange cones, as I passed a cafe...a restaurant...I thought the transition was just around the corner. I really enjoyed this scenic ride, punctuated every 10 miles by the volunteer-staffed aid stations. The bike volunteers, including those providing directional help at the crossroads, were absolutely fabulous!

Top Tennis Players to Miss Olympics

Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati are out of the Olympics! Bummer! I was looking forward to seeing both of these amazing athletes compete.

The medal hopes of the U.S. tennis team went from strong to suspect. The pressure's on defending singles gold medalist Venus Williams, who could face top-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne in the quarterfinals. ESPN

Triathlon with a Cause

I'm hoping for the best at Vineman's Barb's Race this weekend, where I'll be doing the 58 mile bike leg for my team, Girls Love Gu.

For those who don't know, Barb’s Race is held in honor of Barbara Recchia, a long-time Vineman volunteer and race committee member who has fought cancer twice.  Half of all entry fees from Barb’s Race are donated to support local cancer organizations.

Olympics Ahead

With the 2004 Summer Olympics coming up, I'm looking forward to a couple of weeks of competition between the world's top athletes. It's too bad that doping has become an issue. Athletes are being tested constantly, so I don't understand why suspected athletes weren't investigated sooner. I'm sure those who are innocent would like to be free to prepare in a focused manner.

I attended the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. While my 5+ layers of clothing barely kept me warm enough, it was great to be a part of and witness a series of events where the focus was on athletic achievements, and when it was all said and done, a terror-free Olympics.
